Kindle books wishlist

Robert Anton Wilson books to get me.

(Click the picture to get at least an idea of the meanings. Only "ingenuus memes" are defined there yet. That and the opposites of the others.)

Friends mostly. Mainly means there's a bunch of content friends-locked. Also, non-friends and anonymous posters are screened by default. If you are an ass in your comments, your comments will be deleted.

Comment to be added. And if you're an old friend getting a new LJ, let me know that information.

Friending must-knows:

1. I do not tolerate myself or my friends being made fun of for any reason. If I find you have done this, you will be unfriended and banned.

2. I NEVER do friend-culls. If you find you've been banned, it's either a mistake or for the above reason. If you believe it to be a mistake, let me know.

Also, there are three stages here:

1. There's an "Acquaintances" filter, for people I don't know very well. Not much more they get to see than public does, but some things. If you never see any friends-locked entries here, let me know. It seems I have to add people to the Acquaintances filter.

2. Friends - They see the most.

3. Multiplicity - Ask me about this one. It's got the most personal stuff of mine.

Fun stuff and more information. )

Peace;
---Fay

"What To Do When The Power of Positive Thinking Fails,
And How To Avoid Blaming Yourself When It Does"
By = Tempest Alexandria Arts

If you're at all involved in the New Age or pagan movements, you probably know that there are a lot of books out there about the power of positive thinking. There's no shortage of gurus ready to teach you all about how the universe really loves you and wants you to get what you want, and for a price they will teach you how to think in order to tap into this power. Because, as they quickly inform you, if you're confused about what you want or need, the universe will be too, which tidily explains why you aren't already rich and happy.

The power of positive thinking is real, of course, insofar as it can do amazing things because the human Will can do amazing things, but there are a major problems with this philosophy, and there are limits to what it can do that most of these gurus fail to address. First, the assumption behind why positive thinking works (that the universe loves you) works as a great excuse for why you need to be taught how to think positively (by buying their books or taking their expensive classes), but ultimately sets you up for failure. Secondly, it's a lot more difficult than the gurus try to make it seem, because the money is in providing a seemingly simple yet ultimately difficult and complex solution, so that you keep buying their books for more insight, more help. Third, it is far too easy to fall into the trap of victim blaming (especially victim blaming yourself) when it fails, which can become a vicious cycle. And fourth, the process can be made more difficult if you have conditions like clinical depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder, and is not an easy process even without conditions like that. Hopefully, though, you will have a fair idea how to go about the process in a meaningful and realistic way, and be able to help yourself without expensive books or classes, after reading this article.

The central assumption behind the "power of positive thinking" in most New Age philosophy is that God/the universe/the Goddess loves you, and wants you to be happy, but that it can't do that if your thoughts are confused, or you aren't thinking the right way. The idea is that if you don't know what you want, the universe doesn't know what you want either. On the surface, it sounds reasonable and so innocuous, but there are real problems with it that don't really come to light until you've tried it for a decade or more and failed at it, and even then only if you realize there's a problem and stop to analyze it. Because ultimately, the philosophy as it is usually taught is doomed to failure, since the even deeper assumption is that the power of positive thinking can be learned by everyone, it just takes vigilance, and also because the way it is taught is full of flaws; flaws often left in on purpose or added in to begin with, since it makes selling more books easier.

The problem with that assumption that everyone can learn to wield the power of positive thinking is that it isn't true. Getting positive thinking to work for you as it should is one of those things that you can either figure out how to do or you can't, to various degrees. Take lucid dreaming as an example; some people can learn how to do it, and do it easily, others never figure out how to do it at all, still others only manage to lucid dream by accident, and reading books or taking classes doesn't really help much. Similarly, some people can learn to activate the full potential of positive thinking, others never manage it at all, and still others only ever do it by accident, or somewhere else along that spectrum. Books can help, at least in getting the process started, but they can only do so much, and most books on the subject are deeply flawed.

Furthermore, even if you do manage to change your thinking to be positive all the time, that alone may not be enough. The power of positive thinking is a kind of magick, and magick can only influence the odds of something happening, it is still up to other people to have opportunities available for you, and up to you to take said opportunities. After all, you can think as positively as you like in the middle of the Sahara desert, but that's not going to miraculously make water appear out of nowhere. And even if you find an oasis, you still have to walk towards it and drink from its waters; those waters will not come to you.

Now that's not to say the power of positive thinking isn't real, and can't do wonders. It can in fact work, but my stress here is on the can. It can work for you. But not because the universe loves you and wants you to be happy. That belief defies all the evidence. If the universe truly loved us and wanted us to be happy, we would all be immortal, eternally youthful, and eternally healthy, with either no need to eat, or with plenty of food readily available without the need for hard labor. There would be no more menstruation, and people would only be able to have kids if they really wanted to, and the planet would never get overcrowded.

LGBT book

I don't want to spoil anything, but for anyone looking for books with LGBT characters, one of the two primary protagonists of "Down Among The Sticks And Bones" by Seanan McGuire is a lesbian by chapter 9.

On a somewhat related note, the first four or five chapters of that book are an absolutely amazing and frankly horrifying depiction of how to royally mess up children. Without being malicious, the parents of Jacqueline and Jillian are worse than the Dursleys from Harry Potter!

I've started to notice a new ability in dreams: summoning lost objects.

To explain: I have a lot of dreams where I'm carrying something and I set it down for some reason, only to turn around and it's gone because the geography of the dream has changed. I usually spend long minutes hunting around for the lost object until I either wake up or the dream changes and I forget about the object. But twice now that I know of, I have searched only a couple minutes before going "Fuck this" and summoning the object. Like part of my mind is aware it's a dream, and this affords me just enough power to summon the object.

The first time this happened, it was a bicycle. I wanted to bike up this nature trail because hey, in a dream I can do physical stuff without getting tired and without expending any effort, but I couldn't find where I'd parked my bike. After searching for a few minutes, I mentally went "Fuck this" and grabbed the air ahead of me, concentrating on the bike. Suddenly, I had the bike and I could go biking.

Last night, it happened again, a different dream and different situation. I had lost my umbrella this time, set it down on some steps that I couldn't find again later, and I needed it before I could leave the school building I was in (school dreams: depressingly common for me), and I searched maybe a whole minute before remembering my newfound dream power. I held up my hand, said "Accio umbrella!" and the umbrella was in my hand. I was thus able to leave the building and, whether coincidence or not, also woke up then.

I found this poem I wrote some unknown time ago. I was considering publishing it, but I wouldn't know where, and it's so much work for so long to do that, I just don't want to go to that much trouble when I could just hit "post entry." And it's such an amazing poem! Told from the perpective of... well, you'll see.

“The Brown, The Green, and The Black”
By = Tempest Alexandria Arts

The white man took the world, spreading out among its lands by sea,
Exploiting all they touched, stealing the land from the people already there.
They stole the New World from the natives, killing the Red Man,
Bringing the Black Man from Africa as slaves to work for them.

They went to China, spread drug addiction and misery, for their profit,
And India for spices they never use, spreading misery to the cradle of writing.
Every bit of land they could find they took for theirs,
Exploiting its people even into the 21st century.

The white man went into space, and found no resources, no people to exploit,
So they grew bored with it, for the most part.
Sure, they sent their robots out to fly by far-off worlds,
Touched the moon a few times with their men, but then stopped.
“There's nothing in space but black,” they said,
Upset they'd made no green.

When the people of India and China started going up there, they scoffed.
“We wasted all that money going up there; they're not learning from our mistakes!”
They told us all there was in space was rocks and more rocks,
Forgetting there was a time when all we had were rocks;
All they let us have as they raped our lands were stones.

Like weeds growing in the sidewalk, they tried to kill us off,
So they could keep our lands for themselves.
But like weeds growing in the sidewalk, we persisted.
For life would always find a way, and we still lived.

We found the barren rocks they'd abandoned,
And grew like weeds among them.
In the black, we – the brown – made green.
The green of growth, as we built giant rotating farms in the sky.

From India and China, from Japan, from Africa,
From the Middle East, from the New World,
All the brown and red and yellow, every color but white,
Worldwide, we came together and spread through the black,
Making stone soup, growing life among the stars.

The white man still owns the earth, but we own the stars,
With colonies on the moon, the asteroids, and Mars.
And the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and beyond.
Millions of acres of farm and factory, raking in two kinds of green.
Feeding humanity, the breadbasket of the solar system is no longer earth.

And the white man? They are tourists with their cameras,
The old Japanese stereotype passed on to them,
As they marvel at all we've built, at all the green,
The same color they've become, with envy,
Because they were too 'yellow' to make green among the black,
Leaving that to the brown.
To us.

Donald Trump gets to the Pearly Gates and St. Peter says "Ah yes, Donald Trump, do come on in, God wants a few words with you." Smug, he goes in, thinking "Yes, I'm so important God wants to meet me right away." Then the door opens to God's throne room, and Trump looks in awe at the magnificent being, clearly God, on the throne... which is a wheelchair. A black woman wearing a Pride flag pin on Her robes rolls forward with a nasty grin on Her face. "Yes, Donald, do please sit down. You're going to be with Me for a long time before finally... moving on," She says, Her eyes darting toward the floor.

(Yeah I know, I'm pagan, but hey, this doesn't exactly contradict that. And whether She means Hell or reincarnation is kinda left open to interpretation. Either one would not be good for Trumpsterfire, in context.)
fayanora: SK avatar (Default)
Just tried saying "kind of leaves it open to interpretation" and "kind of leaves it up for debate" at the same time, twice in a row, which came out as "kind of leaves it open up for [blergle!]"

We realized earlier today that Fay, Tempest, Negarahn, and Djao'Kain don't really have an accurate term for their gender. Finding an accurate term has proven difficult. The only really accurate human term we've found so far is "hermaphrodite," but that's a word the intersex community doesn't like people using.

Of course, the conversation on gender goes a little weird at times. Recently, one of us was like "Okay so what would the AKB of Traipah call their gender?" Fay was like "They wouldn't. They only have the one sex." But then Tempest countered with "Yeah but once they met the humans, they might come up with a term for it, it would be their version of "cisgender." And they have something like intersex as well, so gender terms for them might come in handy. So what would the AKB call their majority gender?"

Fay thought a moment, then said, "Well gender would be a new concept for them. So they'd probably use some variation on the English word 'gender.' Considering most AKB are just the one sex, I think they'd call it AhKHoi'djender (ah-oy ʒen-der."

Derived, of course, from the Ah'Koi of "Ah'Koi Bahnis" and the word "gender."

The above image, from my Tumblr and now on my LJ and DW profiles, is my personal sigil. Okay, it's not really a sigil, just a collection of symbols. Here are their meanings:

The flag background is the Demisexual pride flag. I'm only demisexual where men are concerned. I don't know if there's another term for that subset or not, though. Probably is, but I don't know it.

In the black triangle you will see two symbols: the pentagam, a religious symbol that represents the five elements (earth, air, water, fire, and spirit).

Also in the black triangle is the transgender power fist symbol. I use it because I'm transgender and to show solidarity with trans people of color (especially black trans people) and to show solidarity with black people in general.

In the top white stripe there is... okay, I think the many circles in a pattern thing was a symbol for multiplicity. Ah yes, I was right.

The seven-pointed star next to it is the primary Otherkin symbol (five of our collective's members are non-human sapients.)

The infinity symbol inside the heart is a symbol of polyamory. Because I am polyamorous.

The funky looking P-shaped symbol is the symbol of pansexuality, because I am a pansexual.

On the far left of the grey stripe (bottom) is the 8-rayed star of chaos magick, because I'm into that as well.

The red and white striped heart inside a half pink half blue circle is the ageplay symbol. I am into ageplay as a "little." It's mostly Molly Elizabeth who's into that; she's one of the people that live in this body, and in our mind's eye she takes the form of a 7 year old girl with blonde pigtails and blue eyes.

The next symbol there is the Greek letter Psi, but I don't remember why I put it there. My guess is it's a reference to my empathic ability, which is a psychic ability, but I'm not sure.

And of course the rainbow flag with white wheelchair person cutout is a reference to my being an LGBT disabled person, though my disability is largely an emotional/mental one. (Chronic depression, chronic anxiety.)

So PhotoBucket apparently now has decided to charge nealy $400 per whatever to let you host images on them and post them on third party sites. IE, the only bloody reason I got a PhotoBucket account in the first place, which was free before.

Screw them, though. I have a Tumblr. I know from experience that you can post a picture to Tumblr, and even if the post and the account that posted it get nuked, the picture will still be there on Tumblr's site, so you could technically no longer have a Tumblr account and still be hosting your images there, because that's how much of a towering pile of shit their code is, that you can't ever delete a picture off their website, not really.

So yeah, I'm hosting my images on Tumblr now.

Took a bunch of vegetables, steam-cooked them, scooped some onto rice, scooped some chicken onto the vegetables, added Triple Ginger Teriyaki sauce, and boom! Simple, delicious meal! Granted, the cooking and cutting of the chicken and the veggies was long and difficult work, but now I'll have a simple throw-together meal for when I have less energy and/or time! (The rice takes only 8 minutes in my microwave-usable rice cooker. And no, it's not instant rice, it's regular rice.)

Veggies I have in this batch:
Broccoli, green beans, sugar snap peas in their pods, three different colors of bell pepper (red, yellow, and orange), carrots, celery, mushrooms, and yellow squash (basically a yellow zucchini).

Later I might add a can of baby corn and a can of water chestnuts. And I have a bottle of orange sauce for when the triple ginger runs out.

So yeah there's another thing: you could buy canned veggies and pre-cut chicken and save time and effort.

On a more positive note, Molly wants to buy a shit-ton of self-adhesive googly eyes in various sizes and go around town sticking them in funny places. :D

Back on the first, my birthday, my friend [personal profile] kengr took me to Chang's Mongolian Grill for the first time ever. A bonus was that because it was my birthday, I got my meal free!

Chang's Mongolian Grill is this awesome Chinese buffet place where they have the raw ingredients (including frozen meat slices) on a buffet, you get what you want in one or two bowls, including sauce, and you take it over to this huge round grill thing where the chefs cook it up for you and hand the finished product back to you. And it's an all-you-can-eat buffet, so if you're willing to stand around waiting for your turn to have your food cooked, then you can go up as many times as you're able (in theory; they might cut you off if you eat too much).

What's more, the food is AMAZING!! I tried a bunch of different ingredient and sauce combos, and nothing tasted bad or even meh, it was all "HOLY HELL MY TASTE BUDS ARE GOING TO EXPLODE WITH PLEASURE!" I think I went up four times, and when I was done I was stuffed like a turducken.

It's a bit spendy, but man, for food that great, and that much of it, it's worth the price! But definitely for special occasions.

I loved the food and the service so much I left a note of praise, with TWO SIDES! I never leave notes of praise! I usually just tip. But this place was worth tipping PLUS telling them in words and pictures how awesome they are.

Here's the note, under the cut:

The deepest )

If you're blind, or just can't read my chicken scratches, here's the transcript:

First side:

This place is great! Delicious food, awesome chefs, friendly wait staff. Definetely will come back again when I can! - Fay [picture of a smiley face sun licking its lips, a couple heart shapes, and a peace sign] More on other side. --->

Second side:

Dear Chefs, You're awesome! Your job must be so difficult, but you make it look almost easy! And you make it all delicious! Continue being amazing!!! - Fay [picture of a smiley face grinning and holding its arms out.]

Also for my birthday, Brooke/kengr got me a pair of headphones and a bluetooth speaker thing that has powerful friggin sound!

LOL my roommate told me how she found this silvery (probably steel) stag horn in a bush by a snake handler's hook and gynecological stirrups; she wondered why those things were there, and I said, "Maybe one of the Ah'Koi Bahnis visited Earth," while pointing at this picture on my wall:

No, that is not a worm or a snake. Yes, that is zir penis. It is prehensile. Yes, the Ah'Koi Bahnis are hermaphrodites.

So Flash updated, and I overlooked one of those stupid "opt out" things for installing software other than the update, and it installed some McCaffee program, which I of course had to uninstall when I found out about it.

Honestly, it should be illegal to do that bullshit. Those extra programs should be opt IN, not out.

Still ill

Bah scumbug, I still have that cold. It's been hanging on like a parasite for over a week now, it's very annoying. I hope it goes away soon, it's driving me crazy and giving me flashbacks to my childhood. I served my time already, being that I was constantly sick in my youth, so much so that my body forgot how to breathe through its nose without me having to concentrate on doing it.

Seriously, it made itself known on the ninth, and though I've gotten better since the first few days where it was kicking my ass, it's like an uninvited guest severely overstaying its welcome by continuing to hang around and stuff up my head and make me cough occasionally. At least so far today the coughing appears to be down to around once every 10 or 15 minutes, or less-frequently.

My being sick all the time as a kid made it so that, with rare exception, I almost never get sick as an adult. I wonder if that means the things that DO manage to get me sick are especially powerful? That could explain the extra-long cold I'm having now.

Did some small hair sacrifices to Jiijiinis and Alorno, gods of Health and Healing, last night. Couldn't burn the sacrifices, because I couldn't find matches, so I had to make them be lost by throwing them away. I thought it had worked this morning, but no, I just keep consistently feeling better when I wake up and backsliding within 20 minutes. It's incredibly annoying.

Gonna find some matches and try again later.
